An incident explanation can sound convincing while skipping the detail that matters. For an SRE, the value is not just the summary. It is the ability to inspect how that summary was reached.
Connect claims to observations
“The database is slow” is a hypothesis. A time-bounded query, a change in request latency, and a trace showing where the time went are inspectable observations. An assistant should keep that distinction visible.
Look for what does not fit
Ask for evidence against the leading explanation. Did the symptom begin before the deployment? Are unaffected services using the same dependency? A useful workflow makes room for disconfirming evidence rather than collecting only supporting examples.
Keep uncertainty in the handoff
A short summary can include what is known, what remains uncertain, and which observation would change the next decision. That structure is often more useful than a confident paragraph that hides the gaps.
